Dear Santa Claus

It's Christmas again and I've really been good,
did nothing I shouldn't, did just what I should.
And all that I ask is in two-thousand ten
a certain Swiss lady play tennis again.

She's better than poor Patty Schnyder by far,
she's Switzerland's other, more talented star,
a lady who, if she were active today,
the current contenders would not want to play.

Those "current contenders", I'm sad to report,
are mostly pretenders who tarnish the sport.
Svetlana is sloppy, Maria's a klutz.
Dinara is boring, Serena is nuts.

It's wonderful Henin and Clijsters are back,
and lucky we are if they stay for a while.
But even those polished professionals lack
Martina's technique, her finesse and her style.

There's only one Hingis, in just the same way
there's only one Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Monet.
An athlete who's skillful, successful and smart
can elevate his or her sport to an art.

I'm feeling betrayed by the WTA,
and surely Martina would not disagree.
Alternative venues in which she could play
include exhibitions and WTT.

Encourage her Santa, and if you succeed
in re-energizing her tennis career,
then Christmas will be very merry indeed,
and two-thousand ten an exciting New Year!
