Martina Hingis-Ana Ivanovic

Martina receives first.
Billabong
Nope, Martina serves first!
Billabong
Martina is quite overpowered in those first games, she hits the ball too short... Go for your shots Marti, get the break back!

LIVE COMMENTS
20:30 Hingis is not one to ever give up on a game though and manages to fight her way back into this. She holds serve and calls for her mum and coach to come onto the court during the change of ends
20:29 A double point from Hingis gives Ivanovic more break points but more importantly two set points
20:28 Another easy service game from Ivanovic finished off with an ace!

This is ridiculous, Hingis actually isn't playing that poorly (certainly better than her first two matches, probably not as good as against Kuznetsova). Ivanovic is playing better than Dementieva did against her in Tokyo.

When will she ever win another title??

Martina tried to cope with her opponent's play, but she proved much more decided than expected... Martina did even not try, at the end... was not fun to watch...

If this is Tokyo take 2 not sure I want to watch the final on repeat. I'll just put down to Ana being red hot. Serving is still a big concern on the quick surfaces. Martina being still first season back she has nothing to lose going into these slams really. Should just go out and be mega-aggressive.
Majlund19
It just proves that Martina haven't learned a damn thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe she should retire and go home and take up knitting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry for the harsh words, but I'm just so disappointed in her!!!!!
sassygirl
Im really disappointed but I'll get over it. I know Marti wanted to win this more than we do so Im sure she tried her best. Pls remember that this is a game, there are winners and there are losers. There will always be another tournament!

This is not the right attitude! Who wouldn't try their best in a final? Ana played an impeccable game today - that's why she won.
mattjallen
Guys!

Please! get a grip!

Martina ran into a red hot young up coming talent today. She's had a great tournament and played top 10, maybe even top 5 tennis today.

I think she shocked martina, and maybe even herself. She deserved this title today, she simply outplayed martina. It happens! Martina is not a robot.

Congrats to Marti on a great tournament - a FINALIST!!

Can't wait for the US Open - bring it on!

Any stats for the match like winners/unforced errors and net approaches for both players?
@did@s
Well ... the only real and true words which I may produce now are disappointment, tears and anger ... bad day, or what?

I still can't believe it happened, GOD I WAS WAITING SO IMPATIENTLY FOR THIS TITLE 8 DAYS, NOT 8 MINUTES, OR 8 HOURS, 8 **CKING DAYS, AND NOW WHAT? sad.gif cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif mad.gif

Man ... it's not fair, Marti played really poor and weak, obviosly this longer rest wasn't a good sign ... this ***in' rain yesterday, I'm sure if they played yesterday, Marti would be happy now hloding the trophy ...

Man ... I'm still crying, I don't wanna cry, but it's just stronger than me ... I know it's not the end of the world, but I feel really bad, worse than her maybe ... it's a part of the game, you can't win everytime, but ... somehow, to loose against non top 10 seede player ... Ana played very strong, Marti played awful today ... I'm very disappointed, not even angry now ... I'll cry the whole night now ... nver mind ...

World goes on, there's US Open approaching soon, hope she'll get better for the start, and will quickly forget about that stupid loss ...

What a disaster in front of the prime-time viewing European audience. sad.gif

Her opponent played well, but wouldn't have been able to do so, if Martina played anywhere near her potential. Gave up without a fight again. Broken 5 times!! A top 10 player really shouldn't be doing that by now.
alfonsojose
Give her a break. A Monday final, after a full-day rain delay, the pressure of beating Kuzzie and entering top ten again. She's no. 9 already. Back off and enjoy it. She got what she needed

Ana din't win the final, Martina lost the final, big difference. Martina is supposed too be so smart on the court, we didn't see that today.
Ana will have no respect for Martina next time they meet, maybe US open and unless Martina steps it up, it'll be goodbye once again!!

Well put. Couldn't have said it better myself.
It's a bitter sweet ending. Martina loses the RC final but cracks the top 10.

She has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

She served well in Tokyo against Sharapova. She's also referred to the match against Kirlenko as one of her best matches of the year, so maybe she served well there too.

What a stupid comment.

Anyway, Ivanovic didn't just play like a top five player, she played one of the best matches I've ever seen (and I've watched a few). The only things I can really fault Martina on is that she a) probably understimated Ana a little at the starrt, cool.gif missed a few fairly easy smashes that she should have put away and c) didn't fight very hard at the end. Other than that she actaully played quite well.

The problem is, the way Martina plays, she simply does not have the game to beat someone playing in the fashion that Ana did today. However, Ana will not always play that well, and thus if she's off her game slightly Martina will have a very good chance to beat her. Martina is a counter pucher and is all about consistency, but with that style of play you've gotta expect to loose the odd macth against a top power hitting player who is in form (and after her Final and SF performance here, there is not doubt that Ivanovic will soon be a top player).

That for me was possibly the single best performance I have seen from any woman this year. Ana played virtually flawless tennis from start to finish and some of her shots make even Serena's look slow. Her serve is as good as anything on the tour and she even has great variety in her game. Her volleys didn't always come off today but she wasn't afraid to come to the net, she played the squash shot forehand that we have seen Martina do many times over the years and used the back hand slice superbly; not just to get the ball back but actually hit winners. Considering she is only eighteen and probably still growing as well as learning the game, I would be amazed if she doesn't go on to be a Grand Slam Champion. In fact at 65/1 I think I am going to put a few quid on her winning the US in a couple of week’s time. There was nothing Martina could do today; I think Ana would have beaten anybody in that sort of form and Martina must try to take the positives from the event and put it behind her.
@did@s
I don't wanna write such things, but it's the truth - my whole week now is gonna be a total disaster, my mood will be down for several days ... I'm not judging Marti about that, I'm just too emotional when she is loosing so important matches ... however there are many good points of all that week in Montreal - she reached the final, she has beaten 3 very good players, showed a character, played well, except on the final, maybe it was a bad day, or it's just this point that sometimes you are doing everything to play well, but it just isn't working, each of us has such days, everything goes under your control, congrats to Ana for her fantastic game, and I really hope Marti will have a lot to think before US Open start, obviosly she needs still more time to repair some spoiled elements in her game, however I'm so proud of her, she played her 3rd final this year, for a player back in game for several months it's a great achevement, I'll never stop supporting her, although everytime she looses such kind of matches I'm so sad and angry ... anyway, it's all over for now wink.gif

Well, look at it this way everyone, at least Martina got herself into
the top 10 with this tournament. So it wasn't all a complete failure. rolleyes.gif wink.gif

That's the bright side, on the not so bright side she met a strong
and up coming player, whose "ASS" she will get later, as she has
all others that have surprised her in the past.

The Williams Sisters, Davenport, Mauresmo, Sharapova, Kuznetsova,
Pierce, Dokic, Pascual, and never forget Hantuchova. To name but a few.

Remember, what so many players that have beaten Martina in the
past have learned.

Beat Martina and die!!! wink.gif
dude
I don't know if anyone will agree but I thought the difference in this game was Martina's opponent. In the other games Martina's opponents made terrible mistakes 'Unforced errors' so many times we saw kuznetsova throwing it too wide. Ivanovic didn't commit those mistakes.

I think in the other matches that was what made Hingis win.

Anyway, my day is ruined. It's gonna take at least 5 days for my sorrow to end.

Yeah if that person is a fan of Martina then he/she is certainly not a good one. Being a proud fan of someone only in good times is not being a true fan.

Anyway, I'm not angry at Martina personally. I just feel bad for her and the situation.

On the bright side, Martina earned another $99,850, 210 points simply for making the finals, and she is now in the top 10.

Even so, I am disappointed.

SteffiFan
Well I for one can't wait to watch this on Eurosport later! biggrin.gif

To be honest, against anyone else from the tournament I would have been for Hingis, but when Ivano got to the final I was hoping she would win it. She's put in a lot of extra work recently as mentioned by Hingis herself. And I remember last year people predicting big things for her but she readily admitted to not being able to cope with that pressure and so she went off the boil a bit. I hope this is the breakthrough tournament for her.

As for people in tears and so on, yep, get a grip. Just be glad Hingis is back! Who knows how much longer she'll be around!

Yes, exactly, martina can´t beat someone in the same fashion that Anna did, her game is more about consistency and she needs to explore the weakness of her opponents and some days, for a person that needs to do that in every match at a certain day you can´t focuse on doing that, and i believe that today was difficult to explore Anna weakness because she can win clean winners one after the other. I think it´s ridiculous what some people are saying, she is back in top 10, she had a very good tournament and she should and needs to look at the positive things in this week, off course i would prefer her to win, but im still proud of her.
